Programme outline

The Russian Government offers annual scholarships for South Africans to study at Russian institutions. The scholarship is offered for Bachelor's, Masters and PhD degrees. Most programmes are taught in the Russian language.

Scholarship recipients are required to undertake a preparatory course related to their field of study (including language training) for one year before pursuing their degree studies. Only after passing the examinations of the college preparatory course can they start their degree studies.

The Department of Higher Education and Training is responsible for nominations for this scholarship.

Placement of candidates at institutions is done by the Russian Ministry of Science and Education.

Who can apply?

    - South African citizens in good health (medical test are required for successful applicants);
    - Have a strong academic record
  • o Bachelor's applicants should have a minimum 70% average in their National Senior Certificate
    (excluding LO)
  • o Postgraduate applicants should have a minimum average of 65% in their previous studies;

  • - Be available to study in Russia from September 2019;
    - Demonstrated interest in Russia and commitment to the development of South Africa;
    - Applications in all fields of study except medicine will be considered;
    - Preference will be given to postgraduate applicants, previously disadvantaged applicants and
    applicants in the following fields;

  • - Applicants must meet the minimum academic requirements for entry into a similar programme at a South African university.

Language of Instruction

MOST programmes are taught through the Russian language medium and a preparatory course related
to the field of study is included in the scholarship. Only after passing the examinations of the college
preparatory course can they start their degree studies.

Some Russian higher education institutions may conduct programmes in English, but placement in an
English-taught programme is not guaranteed.

Institutions and Programmes

Applicants are required to do their own research into available programmes, institutions and programme-
specific entrance criteria. Details on the program can be found on www.russia.study/en

Applicants are also encouraged to apply directly to their university of choice in Russia. PhD applicants
are encouraged to make contact with potential supervisors.

Studies must be completed within the duration of the scholarship.

Scholarship Conditions

The Russian Government provides the following:

    - Registration and tuition fees
    - Accommodation subsidy (shared accommodation only)
    - Limited monthly stipend (depending on academic performance)

The South African Government provides the following (subject to the availability of funds):

    - One return economy airfare
    - Monthly stipend
    - Once-off settlement allowance
    - Annual allowance
    - Research funding (postgraduate only)

Successful scholarship applicants will be required to sign a contract, attend a pre-departure briefing and
return to South Africa upon completion of studies.

1. Copy of South African National Senior Certificate (NSC) with a Bachelor’s pass OR a certificate of equivalence (from the Matriculation Board) if a school leaving certificate other than the NSC was obtained. 

 

A minimum of 70% average is required, excluding Life Orientation.

Marks of pre-requisite subjects for chosen field of study (eg for Engineering applicants, NSC Maths and Physics marks OR for social sciences, NSC English marks) will be reviewed separately

DEADLINE: 27 February 2019

Applications can only be submitted by email on internationalscholarships@dhet.gov.za and must reach
the DHET by the deadline of 27 February 2019.

The Russian Government online application must be completed by no later than 27 February 2019.

All applications received by the DHET will be acknowledged by email within 3 working days. Please
follow up if you do not receive an email acknowledgement after this time. However, please note that
the Department will be closed from 15 December 2018 to 2 January 2019 and acknowledgements of
applications in early January may take longer

The DHET is unable to consider any applications that are not received by 27 February 2019 or that are
incomplete.


Review process

Stage one:  All applications will be screened based on meeting the minimum requirements for eligibility for
                     the scholarship.

Stage two:  Applications will be ranked according to past academic performance and a limited
                     number of applications will move forward to Stage three.

Stage three:  Applicants who pass the second stage will be invited to attend an interview in person,
                       or via Skype in special circumstances. Candidates will also be required to complete a
                       written questionnaire at the time of the interview. No interviews will be done
                       telephonically. Any candidate who does not arrive on time for their confirmed
                       interview without informing us in advance, will be immediately disqualified, regardless
                       of the reason. Candidates who cannot be contacted on the phone number provided in
                       the application or who do not respond to emails will be disqualified.

Stage four:    A limited number of Master's and PhD applicants will be reviewed by two academics.

Stage five:    (i)  Bachelor's applicants will be nominated based on the outcome of the interview,
                       questionnaire and reference check;
                       (ii)  Master's and PhD applicants will be nominated based on the combined outcome
                       of the interview, questionnaire, reference check and the academic review.

Stage six:    Nominated candidates will be informed that they have been nominated for the
                    scholarship and requested to do medical test. Their documents will then be reviewed in
                    Russia, where the final decision will be made regarding the award of the scholarship.

Nominated candidates may be given a limited amount of time to submit further documents. These
documents include medical tests, and/or academic assessments. Institutions in the host country may
also require online or telephone interviews. You will be advised accordingly.

Unsuccessful applicants will be notified by email. Unfortunately individual explanations cannot be
provided to unsuccessful applicants.

Successful candidates will be required to attend an orientation in Pretoria before departure. Orientation
is meant to assist successful candidates with preparation for departure and provide necessary
information.
