International scholarships for South Africans: Email alerts

There are a number of scholarship opportunities currently available for South African students to undertake studies, research and exchanges in other countries. The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) coordinates several such scholarships, while others are managed by other international, national and provincial departments or government agencies. Scholarships are for South African citizens and require a commitment to return to South African upon completion of studies.



JAPAN: ABE Initiative 2019

  • Programme outline

    This programme offers opportunities for young and eligible African men and women to study Master's courses in Japan and to undertake internships at Japanese enterprises in order to develop effective skills and knowledge in various fields, to contribute to the development of industries in Africa. This program aims at human resource development in both private and public sectors in order to cultivate a strong human network between Japan and Africa.


    At the 5th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD V) held in Yokohama in 2013, the Japanese Government stated its policy of strengthening support for the on-going dynamic growth of Africa with stronger public-private partnerships. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo ABE announced the "African Business Education Initiative for Youth".

HUNGARY: Stipendium Hungaricum for South Africa

    The Hungarian Government is offering 100 scholarships to South African students to study at participating public university in Hungary.All courses available for South Africans are taught in English.

SWITZERLAND: Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship for foreign students 2019/2020


  • Programme outline

    Through the Swiss Federal Commission for Scholarships for Foreign Students, the Swiss Government Grants foreign researchers, postgraduate scholarships at Swiss higher education institutions. The Swiss Government Excellence Scholarship are intended for highly motivated, competitive young researchers who have graduated from university. These scholarships will enable applicants to undertake research work in the fields in which the Swiss universities are particularly active.

JAPAN: UNESCO / Keizo Obuchi Research Fellowships Programme

  • Programme outline

    The Government of Japan, through Funds-in-Trust Project and the UNESCO Co-Sponsored Fellowships Programme, is offering research fellowships to conduct research in Japan in identified fields. The fellowships foster research and knowledge sharing between people across the world and enable capacity-building between UNESCO member states.
