The Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT) is offering scholarships to foreign students who wish to study at Japanese universities under the Japanese Government Scholarship Programme in 2022.

The aim of the scholarship is to foster human resources who will become bridges of friendship between South Africa and Japan through study in Japan and candidates who will contribute to the development of both countries and the wider world.

  • Research students (Master's, Doctoral, or Professional Graduate Course)
  • Undergraduate students
  • Training Courses

Who can apply?

Must be a South African in good health;

Applicants must be willing to learn Japanese;

Applicants must be interested in Japan and be willing to deepen their understanding of Japan after arrival;

Applicants must have the ability to do research and adapt to living in Japan.

Fields of study

  1. Research students (Master's, Doctoral or Professional Graduate Course)

Applicants should apply for the field of study they majored in at university or a related field.

The fields of study must be the courses that applicants will be able to study and research at Japanese universities.

Must be under 35 years of age and a university graduate (includes prospective graduates).

Minimum of an Honour's degree or NQF level 8 qualification required.

  1. Undergraduate students

Must be at least 17 and under 25 years of age and have a National Senior Certificate or equivalent.

Applicants who wish to undertake undergraduate studies in Japan must choose a major field of study from option (1) or (2) below. Applicants may enter their first, second, and third choice.

(1) Social Sciences and Humanities
1-A: Law, Politics, Pedagogy, Sociology, Literature, History, Japanese language.
1-B: Economics, Business Administration.

(2) Natural Sciences
2-A: Science (Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry), Electric and Electronic Studies (Electronics, Electrical Engineering, Information Engineering), Mechanical Studies (Mechanical Engineering, Naval Architecture), Civil Engineering and Architecture (Civil Engineering, Architecture, Environmental Engineering), Chemical Studies (Applied Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Industrial Chemistry, Textile Engineering), other fields (Metallurgical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Maritime Engineering, Biotechnology).
2-B: Agricultural studies (Agriculture, Agricultural Chemistry, Agricultural Engineering, Animal Science, Veterinary Medicine, Forestry, Food Science, Fisheries), Hygienic studies (Pharmacy, Hygienics, Nursing), and Science (Biology)

  1. Specialized Training Course

Must be at least 17 and under 25 years of age and have a National Senior Certificate or equivalent (includes prospective graduates).

The following fields of study are offered to applicants interested in the specialized training:

  • Business
  • Fashion and Home Economics
  • Culture and General Education
