The Polish National Commission for UNESCO and the UNESCO Chair for Science, Technology and Engineering Education are offering thirty fellowships for short-term research programmes at the AGH University of Krakow in Poland.

The purpose of this fellowship is to strengthen international understanding and friendship among nations and the people of Poland by enhancing human resource capacity in developing countries.

Duration and Place of Fellowship Study

The fellowship will last for 6 months, between 1 October 2024 and 31 March 2025 at the AGH University of Krakow, UNESCO AGH Chair.

Applicants should refer to the list of fields of researches and projects and their respective criteria for the specific criteria and qualifications required by each field of research and project.

Note that for some fields of research and projects, only the candidates from certain regions are eligible to apply. Please refer to list of fields of research/projects open to different invited region for detailed information.

Fields of Study

Beneficiaries of these fellowships will be given the opportunity to undertake an individual research programme in the field of Science, Technology and Engineering.

What the Fellowship offers

Polish Authorities offers:

  • Free tuition and access to the university facilities based on the local regulations;
  • Monthly allowance of 1800 PLN for BSc degree students and 2200 PLN for MSc degree students (1 USD = approximately 4 PLN) to cover all living expenses and accommodation in Poland; and
  • A one-time special allowance of 1800 PLN for BSc degree students or 2200 PLN for MSc degree students to be paid upon arrival in Poland (for 6 months stay period). This sum will cover different activities related to your stay in Krakow, such as an obligatory medical check-up upon arrival (in accordance with the internal regulations for all students); cultural, historical and/or touristic visits, conferences, workshops, and seminars related to your studies.

UNESCO offers:

  • International travel expenses (by the most direct, economical route): from the beneficiary’s country to and from Poland;
  • Health insurance for fellowship beneficiaries who are declared medically fit;
  • One-time special pocket allowance amounting to US$120 (one hundred and twenty US dollars).

Application process                 

Before you start your application, please check the list of Invited Member States and the list of fields of research/projects open to different invited region to make sure South Africa is eligible for your intended project/field of research.

Step 1:
Read carefully the terms and conditions and the list of fields of researches and projects and their respective criteria  to understand the requirements for eligible candidatures and the procedures for application submission.

Step 2:

Step 3:
Prepare your application, including the following supporting documents to the South African National Commissions:

  • The prescribed UNESCO fellowship application form, including medical certificate, ALL four (4) pages duly completed in English using capital letter (illegible documents will be eliminated from the evaluation procedure, and hand writing form must be written in capital letters only);
  • A copy of your identity photo;
  • Certified copies (in English) of Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree/ PhD obtained (candidates should have completed and obtained the degrees before applying for this fellowships programme, and the presented degrees shall meet the requirements and regulations of European Union);
  • UNESCO certificate of language knowledge, duly completed by a relevant authority, if the mother tongue of the candidate is not English; and
  • Information sheet and Check list;
  • Two letters of recommendation.

Step 4:
Submit your application with all the supporting documents mentioned above to the South African National Commission for UNESCO. NOTE: As National Commission for UNESCO of the invited countries will select and transmit the applications of nominated candidates to UNESCO Paris Headquarter by 10 May 2024 at the latest, applicants are advised to submit their application to the National Commissions at least two weeks before the UNESCO Paris Headquarter deadline.

Step 5:

Note: Only applications endorsed  by the South African National Commission will be accepted by UNESCO. It is mandatory for each endorsed candidate to submit his/er information sheet by Friday 10 May 2024, 12pm Paris time at the latest
