The Government of the Republic of Mauritius is offering scholarships to eligible South Africans for full-time, on-campus undergraduate and postgraduate studies at public Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in Mauritius for the 2026/2027 academic year.
The Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) is the Nominating Agency for South African applicants to the Mauritius-Africa Scholarship Scheme. This call is for South African citizens only. Applicants from other countries should contact their respective governments or the Mauritius Ministry of Education.

Who Can Apply?
General Criteria:
- Must be a South African citizen in good health with a strong academic record;
- Must demonstrate interest in studying in Mauritius and a commitment to South Africa’s development;
- Must be available to commence studies in Mauritius in July/September 2026;
- Must meet the entry requirements for the chosen study programme and institution;
- Must be proficient in English;
- Must not already hold a scholarship from any Mauritian public source;
- Must apply for full-time, on-campus studies at a Mauritian public HEI before the scholarship deadline;
- Must provide either:
(a) a conditional offer of admission, or
(b) proof of application (receipt of application fee) from a Mauritian public HEI. - Awardees must comply with Mauritian public health regulations and immigration requirements.
Undergraduate Applicants:
- Must have successfully completed National Senior Certificate with a Bachelor’s pass and minimum average of 60%, excluding Life Orientation;
- Must be 18 years or older, but not yet 26 years of age by 1 January 2026;
- Applicants already holding an undergraduate degree will not be considered.
For MPhil, MPhil /PhD and PhD programme:
- Must be under 40 years of age by 1 January 2027;
- Must hold the relevant undergraduate or postgraduate qualification in a related field;
- Must contact and obtain written acceptance from a potential supervisor in Mauritius;
- Must submit an abridged research proposal, including title, aims, background, methodology, and timeline;
- Applicants already holding a PhD will not be considered.

What the Scholarship Offers
Mauritian Government provides:
- Tuition fees up to MUR 100,000 per year
- Monthly living allowance of MUR 16,500
- Return airfare (economical route)
- Public healthcare in Mauritian hospitals
South African Government provides:
- Settlement allowance
- Pre-departure orientation
- SAQA verification
- Board examination fees (where applicable)
Application Process
STEP 1: Apply directly to an eligible Mauritian public HEI for admission by the institutional deadline.
STEP 2: Submit the completed Mauritius-Africa Scholarship Scheme Application Form and supporting documents to

- Certified copy of birth certificate and ID;
- Certified passport biodata page (if available);
- Certified academic transcripts and certificates;
- Conditional offer OR proof of application;
- For postgraduate applicants: Abridged research proposal & supervisor acceptance
STEP 3: Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed.
STEP 4: Final selection by the Government of Mauritius. Only nominated applicants submit the medical certificate.
NB: Applicant will need to have a certificate of character/certificate of morality/certificate of good conduct or equivalent, issued by the competent authorities in the country of origin, for processing of VISA
